Dunestrider
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux
Game Concept
Dunestrider is a 2D platformer set on a foreign desert planet with a unique movement system based on propelling yourself off of surfaces with ion blasts.
The game utilizes a 2.5D artstyle, mixing 2D sprites and backgrounds with 3D platform and midground assets while keeping an orthogonal perspective and restricting movement to two dimensions.
The game is set on Oculus, a desert planet in a far corner of space. Oculus has three suns that move in ever-changing, irrational patterns. The subsequent gravity fluctuations cause sandstorms to dance across the surface, revealing ancient ruins or burying them again. The player assumes the role of an archeologist of a spacefaring civilization, rushing through recently unveiled ruins to collect artifacts and history before the storms seal them again beneath the sand.
Moment to moment gameplay consists of analysing the level on the fly and moving through it at the high speeds the ion blasts allow, maneuvering challenging platform layouts and avoiding obstacles; any damage is fatal and will quickly respawn the player at the last checkpoint.
